NIE by e-residence

Using your NIE

What your NIE lets you do — and what it doesn't

The NIE is the key that fits every Spanish administrative lock — but the key is not the door. It identifies you in every economic act; rights (work, residence) come from separate permits.

The three classic confusions

NIE ≠ residency

Holding a NIE does not make you a resident or allow stays beyond visa rules. Residence comes from permits or EU registration.

NIE ≠ work permit

You can hold a NIE with zero right to work. Non-EU work requires an authorisation; EU citizens register as workers.

NIE ≠ NIF for companies

For you as an individual the NIE doubles as your NIF. Companies get a separate company NIF.

Don't have a NIE yet?

It is the first step for everything above. We file on POA — 5–10 working days, no appointments.

Frequently asked questions

Can I open a Spanish bank account with just a NIE?

Yes for a non-resident account — NIE + passport are the core. Resident accounts add the residence certificate.

Does a NIE let me work?

No. Work requires authorisation or EU citizenship; the NIE is only the identifier used in the process.

Can I buy property with a NIE?

Yes — it is mandatory for the deed. It grants no immigration status by itself.

Do students need a NIE?

For stays over 90 days, yes — via the student permit process.
