NIE for a bank account: what banks require
Every Spanish bank asks for your NIE before opening an account. Non-residents can open an account with NIE + passport; resident accounts add the residence certificate. Here is the exact requirement set.
TL;DR
- NIE + passport opens a non-resident account at most Spanish banks.
- Resident accounts additionally require the residence certificate (green EU / TIE).
- Some banks ask for a recent certificate (under 3–6 months) — duplicates cost €9.84.
- No NIE yet? 5–10 working days via POA route.
