What this tool checks
- Format: one letter X, Y or Z, exactly 7 digits, one control letter.
- Control letter: computed with the modulo-23 algorithm (same as DNI, with X=0, Y=1, Z=2 prepended).
- Common typos: O instead of 0, I instead of 1, missing hyphens or spaces.
How the NIE check letter works
The control letter is calculated from the number itself — like a checksum. The first NIE letter converts to a digit (X = 0, Y = 1, Z = 2), giving an 8-digit number. Divide it by 23 and take the remainder; the letters T R W A G M Y F P D X B N J Z S Q V H L C K E indexed by that remainder is the correct control letter. If your last letter differs, the number contains a typo.
Example: Y1234567 → digits become 11234567 → 11234567 mod 23 = 14 → 15th letter in the sequence... the correct control letter is L. So Y1234567L is a structurally valid NIE.

No public NIE lookup exists — beware of scams
Spain does not publish a registry linking NIE numbers to people. No official body offers a “NIE lookup by name” service. Websites or WhatsApp services claiming they can find someone else’s NIE or check a NIE against a database are scams — at best they take your money, at worst they phish the documents you upload. The only structural check anyone can run is the one on this page: format and control letter.

Can I look up whose NIE a number is?
No. No public registry links NIE numbers to names. Services claiming otherwise are scams. Only format verification (this page) is possible without official status.
Where do I find my own NIE if I lost it?
Check the visa sticker, TIE card, white certificate, any tax filing or contract with you. Otherwise request a copy at the police station that issued it, or via your former representative.
What is the difference between NIE and DNI format?
DNI (citizens): 8 digits + control letter. NIE (foreigners): X/Y/Z + 7 digits + control letter. Same modulo-23 algorithm, with the first NIE letter converted to 0/1/2 first.
Why does my NIE start with Y?
X series was exhausted in July 2008; since then new NIEs start with Y. Z is reserved. The prefix does not affect validity.
Is this validator official?
It is a mathematical format check — the same one Spanish forms run. It confirms structure, not issuance. Only the Policia Nacional registry confirms a NIE was actually issued.
