NIE by e-residence

NIE renewal: you don't need it. What you actually renew is the TIE.

TL;DR

  • The NIE itself is for life and never expires. You never renew it.
  • What expires is the TIE card (foreigners with a residence permit) or the EU certificate (CUE) (EU/EEA citizens). Both have validity periods and need renewal.
  • TIE renewal costs €19.30 on Modelo 790 código 012 (concept "TIE — renovación"). EU certificate renewal: €12.00.
  • Renewing your address, marital status, or employer? That's a TIE update — not a NIE reissue.
  • Lost the paper NIE certificate? You can request a duplicate with a fresh €9.84 EX-15.

Why the confusion exists (and why Google sends the wrong page)

The GSC data for nienumberspain.com shows 89 impressions/month from queries like "dni renewal spain", "renew dni spain", and "nie renewal appointment". Zero clicks — because Google sends the user to our NIE hub, and the NIE hub talks about NIE, not TIE. So:

  • Searcher wants to renew a document. Google matches our NIE page (because the word "renew" appears in our content).
  • Searcher lands on the page, doesn't find what they want, leaves.
  • We lose the click. Searcher loses the answer.

The root cause is that "renew NIE" is what people say, but they usually mean "renew my residence card" (TIE) or "renew my Spanish ID" (DNI — but they're foreigners, so they don't have one). The 89 monthly impressions are an opportunity we currently leak.

This page exists to fix that: rank for the confusion terms, redirect searchers to the right document, and tell them exactly what to renew.

What you actually renew (by document)

If you're a non-EU/EEA foreigner with a residence permit

It's the TIE you renew — not the NIE. TIE renewal procedure:

  1. Book cita previa at the Oficina de Extranjería for "TIE — renovación".
  2. Fill EX-15 (yes, same form as for NIE — used for many procedures).
  3. Pay €19.30 on Modelo 790 código 012, concept "TIE — renovación".
  4. Bring: passport, current TIE, photos, proof of address (empadronamiento), and any updated documents (work contract, social security).
  5. Attend appointment, give fingerprints, wait for new card.

If you're an EU/EEA citizen

It's the CUE you renew. EU certificate renewal procedure:

  1. Book cita previa at the Oficina de Extranjería for "Certificado UE — renovación".
  2. Fill EX-18 (the EU-certificate form, different from EX-15).
  3. Pay €12.00 on Modelo 790 código 012, concept "Certificado UE".
  4. Bring: passport, current CUE, proof of address (empadronamiento), proof of employment or self-sufficiency.

If you have a NIE only (no TIE, no CUE) — e.g. a non-resident property owner

You don't renew anything. The NIE is for life. If you've lost the paper certificate, request a duplicate with a fresh EX-15 and €9.84.

Lost your NIE certificate?

Three scenarios, three answers:

  • You have the NIE number but lost the paper: you can request a duplicate — same EX-15, €9.84, 3–4 weeks.
  • You have the number, the paper is damaged: same as above — duplicate is treated like a fresh application.
  • You have neither the number nor the certificate: you re-apply from scratch. There is no central Spanish lookup that retrieves your NIE from your name alone — the EX-15 receipt is your only proof of original application.

Keep your EX-15 receipt. It's the only document that proves you applied and what number was issued. r/GoingToSpain users with old NIE numbers — sometimes 5, 10, 15 years old — confirm there is no way to retrieve a lost number without the receipt.

Common mistakes (real cases)

  • Paying the wrong concepto on the 790/012. Same form as NIE. Tick "TIE — renovación" if you want €19.30, not €9.84 (which is for NIE), not €16.08 (which is for first TIE). r/GoingToSpain users describe this confusion repeatedly.
  • Trying to renew a NIE by re-applying from scratch. You don't need a fresh NIE — your old one is still valid. You re-apply only if you lost the certificate.
  • Confusing TIE validity with NIE validity. TIE expires every 1–5 years (depending on permit). NIE never expires. The number on your TIE and the NIE underneath are the same — the card is what expires, not the number.
  • Overstaying an expired TIE while travelling. There's no automatic grace period. If your TIE expires while you're outside Spain, you have two paths: apply at the consulate (4–12 weeks) or return before expiry and renew in Spain (1–4 weeks). Overstaying in Spain after TIE expiry is an infraction under Título III of LO 4/2000.

Frequently asked questions

Does a Spanish NIE expire?

No. A NIE is assigned for life and is never reassigned. The number itself never expires. What does expire is the residence permit it sits on (TIE card, EU certificate) — those have validity periods and need renewal.

Do I need to renew my NIE if I change my address?

Not the NIE itself, but the TIE card (if you have one) needs an address update at the Oficina de Extranjería. The NIE is the number — it follows you. The TIE is the physical card tied to your permit.

What's the difference between NIE, TIE, CUE and DNI?

NIE = tax-style ID number for foreigners. TIE = physical residence card that holds the NIE. CUE = green certificate EU/EEA citizens get. DNI = ID card for Spanish citizens. Spaniards do not have a NIE; foreigners never get a DNI.

How long is a TIE card valid?

Depends on the underlying residence permit. Initial TIE: usually 1 year. Renewals: 2 years each on most permits. Long-term residence (larga duración) TIE: 5 years, renewable. EU certificate CUE: 5 years for initial registration, then 10 years on renewal.

How much does TIE renewal cost?

TIE first card (form EX-17): €16.08. TIE renewal: €19.30. EU certificate first issue: €12.00; renewal: also €12.00. Same Modelo 790 código 012 form as NIE — different concepto line.

What if my TIE expires while I'm outside Spain?

Two paths. (1) Apply for TIE renewal at the Spanish consulate in your country of residence, with cita previa at the consulate — 4–12 weeks. (2) Return to Spain before the TIE expires and apply at the Oficina de Extranjería — 1–4 weeks.

I have a NIE from years ago. Can I use it on a new application?

Yes — your NIE is for life. If you're applying for a new residence permit, you reuse the same NIE. The TIE gets renewed; the NIE never changes.
