Step-by-step: book a NIE cita previa
- Step 1 — Go to sede.policia.gob.es. Click "Cita previa" in the menu, then "Policía — asignación de NIE a extranjeros". Some offices hide it under "Trámites de extranjería".
- Step 2 — Identify yourself online. You'll be asked for a Cl@ve or DNIe — if you don't have those, you can also authenticate by filling a EX-15 in advance and bringing it to the appointment. Real users sometimes fall into a 5-minute loop at this point.
- Step 3 — Select the office and procedure. Pick a Spanish police station (Oficina de Extranjería) and "Asignación de NIE". Each office has its own slot calendar.
- Step 4 — Pick a date and time. The calendar shows available slots — they show 4 weeks ahead by default. Click an open slot. Some offices let you filter by hour; most just show "morning" or "afternoon".

Consulate cita previa (applying from your country)
If you're applying at a Spanish consulate outside Spain (e.g. London, Paris, New York), the appointment system is different. Each consulate uses one of:
- electronicappointment.maec.gob.es — the EU-wide consulate booking platform. Used by London, Paris, Berlin, Rome, etc. Wait: 2–8 weeks.
- Consulate-specific portals — some consulates use their own system (e.g. Washington DC, Los Angeles, Miami). Each has its own wait — check the consulate's website.
Why consulates are not faster
People assume consulates are quieter than police stations. They are not. Madrid office might issue 200 NIEs/day. London consulate might issue 15/day. Capacity is smaller, the queue is the same length.

Common cita previa mistakes
- Typing your name without accents. The system is unforgiving — "Garcia" never matches "García". Use Spanish accented form, even if your passport doesn't.
- Choosing the wrong category. "Policía — asignación de NIE" is the right one. "Policía — certificados" is for renewals. "Policía — huellas" is for fingerprint appointments. Picking the wrong one wastes the slot.
- Forgetting the cita confirmation code. You'll type it 4 times during the visit. Print it.
- Forgetting the 790/012 fee. Some offices ask for the receipt on entry. If you've paid at a bank that didn't issue a receipt, print your Modelo 790 with the validation seal from the bank.
- Going to the wrong office. Madrid has Atocha, Aluche, multiple others. The slot is for one specific office.
